While many Australians see news of war and disaster almost every day, few feel empowered enough to step up and challenge the status quo. It’s time we changed that by encouraging today’s youth, our students, to be tomorrow’s leaders for justice and equality!

World Vision Youth Conference is a platform for young minds to come together to build their social awareness and learn how their actions can help put a stop to global injustice. The conference unites thousands of students from across Australia every year and gives them the opportunity to channel their potential for leadership.

Speaker sessions, collaborative exercises and interactive workshops will set the stage for students to gain valuable knowledge and skills. Youth Conference empowers students to act and inspire others to stand up for young people experiencing injustice and inequality – and be leaders of global change.

Front man of Melbourne band Chasing Ghosts, Jimmy has toured the world playing music. Active in the training and education of large organisations and communities on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness and history, he is an inspirational Aboriginal mentor working alongside Indigenous communities in various roles across Australia.

An award-winning human rights activist, inspirational speaker, facilitator and consultant, Khadija is an inspiring African Australian woman offering vision and leadership to women, youth and minority groups. Multi-award winning, she is a survivor advocate helping to protect Australian girls from Female Genital Mutilation and supporting survivors of FGM.

Join the 40 Hour Famine Backpack Challenge

The 2019 40 Hour Famine Backpack Challenge is the perfect opportunity for your student leaders to put their newfound skills to good use and lead the change in their schools.

Sign your school up for the event and unite with thousands of other Australians to lead global change by raising funds for young people who’ve been forced to flee their homes. Take up the challenge and commit to living out of your backpack with only essentials for 40 hours.

Information for teachers and parents

Parental consent

Please ensure your school obtains appropriate parental consent for each student attending the Youth Conference. This information should be provided to parents and guardians at the time consent is requested.

Supervision

We expect that each school follow its normal excursion procedure in sending students to the Youth Conference, including having the appropriate number of teachers supervising students. Each school is responsible for monitoring student attendance and regulating their behaviour where necessary.

Transport

Each school is responsible for transporting students to and from the event venue.

Food

Students are advised to bring their own food. We will not be responsible for students who leave the venue to purchase food and expect teachers to supervise them.

Refunds

You’ll receive a confirmation of payment and registration via email for all tickets purchased and paid in full before the Youth Conference. We’re happy to transfer registrations to other persons, so please let us know of any changes before the event so we can update our records. A full refund, less a $15 administration fee per registrant, will be issued for registrations cancelled seven days or more before the event.

Filming and photographs

The Youth Conference is an important part of the 40 Hour Famine Backpack Challenge campaign and we will be filming and taking photos of both students and teachers at the Youth Conference. We will only take close-up photographs or film one-on-one interviews with the subject’s approval. These materials may be used for Youth Conference and 40 Hour Famine Backpack Challenge promotional purposes and may be disclosed to other organisations (such as media or advertising agencies) for the purpose of preparing promotional material. Please note that by attending the Youth Conference, each teacher and student is taken to have consented to being filmed and photographed in a general manner and to being approached for interview. Parents and carers, please note that you will be presumed to have consented to any filming or photographing of your child/children at the Youth Conference.

Privacy

World Vision is committed to protecting the privacy of personal information provided to us. We use the information you provide to enable us to arrange this event, including sending you information about it and as set out in our Privacy Statement on our website. Participation is at your own risk

Students, teachers and schools participate in the Youth Conference at their own risk. We want all attendees to enjoy their time at the Youth Conference and require teachers to supervise students at all times. World Vision Australia will not be responsible for any loss, damage or claim except where it has acted with gross negligence. By students and teachers participating in the Youth Conference, schools, teachers, parents and students release World Vision Australia (WVA) from (and indemnify WVA against) any claim they may have against it (including any arising out of the matters listed on this webpage) except where WVA has been grossly negligent.
